BEAUTIFUL LAND: Citizen Store (2026)

Inside the border of Beautiful Land. Entry requires a citizen number and a tier, both issued at the BEAUTIFUL LAND: Immigration Centre. Access online via https://www.beautiful-land.org/

Citizen Store is open to anyone who has passed the immigration checkpoint and holds a citizen number and a tier. The tier decides which objects are released and which are withheld: admission to the country is not admission to everything in it.

Here, you are issued nine labour units (LU, the only currency in Beautiful Lnad). Here, twenty-nine objects are on display; at the lowest tier (Tier1), ten objects are withheld. You can hold about a sixth of what you are allowed.

Twenty-nine objects fill the left column. The right column carries the record kept while you browse: time spent at the counter, labour-units remaining, the running assessment, and the order itself. Therefore, while you shop, you are read. What you buy counts, but so does how long you stay, how many objects you open, how often you are refused something you cannot afford, and how often you click on something above your tier. The record moves as you go, so no single purchase can be traced to a movement.

The catalogue is not balanced. Of the three qualities the state measures: Productivity, Obedience, Celebrity. Obedience accounts for about two thirds of what is for sale and Celebrity for less than a tenth. You cannot buy your way to being seen. The only thing that raises Celebrity is reaching for what you are not allowed, and every reach is entered.

At the end the shop prints a receipt. It lists what you bought, what you were found to be, where to pick your order and how.

The interview at the border you thought was over is still deciding what you are allowed to own in Beautiful Land. The Citizen Store is designed as an administrative system rather than a shop. Its preaching is procedural: nothing is argued and nothing is sold, only permitted, withheld and recorded. Unlike the Souvenir Store, it genuinely sells nothing: it takes no money, it issues against labour-units. And permitted, withheld and recorded are the store’s own words and the state’s decisions.
