ECHOLOCAL SPACES (2024-2025)

Echolocal Spaces is an interactive audio installation where movement shapes sound and space echoes locality of the Twente region. After visitors create their own personal sound map, they gently move through this shifting auditory landscape using custom listening devices, blending field recordings from the local environment. This evolving experience invites slow exploration, and creates a deepening awareness of sound, space, and presence.

This project is supported by Cross-TIC and PLANETART.

At the core are 24 soundscapes—field recordings collected across Twente—that form the auditory map.

A wearable listening device includes: (1) a Bluetooth headphone, (2) a 3D-printed case mounted directly on the headphone, integrating inside a gyroscope sensor, an RGB LED light and an ESP32 microcontroller powered by a lithium polymer battery.
